Joseph Willick Family

Joseph Willick was the first son of Nicholus and Anna Marie Willig.  Joseph married Esther Boyer on the 8th of January 1833, in the Holy Trinity Church, Chippawa, Ontario, Canada. Esther was the daughter of Mary and John Boyer Sr. She was born in Canada in 1813.

Joseph became a Mennonite after marriage.  Joseph and Esther had a large family and lived in a 1 1/2 storey house on Sodom Road. Their land was Lot 15, Concession 3.

A quotation from the Mennonite Quarterly Review, published by the Mennonite Historical Society (Goshen College, Goshen, Indiana) says:

"Joseph Willick was one of three brothers who came from Germany to Canada as Roman Catholic conscientious objectors to military service. Two of the three brothers became Mennonites. He died July 8, 1872. In 1833 he married Esther Boyer, daughter of John Boyer. He homesteaded on the Sodom Road, two miles south of Chippawa. There were six sons and five daughters in their family. He was a deacon in the Mennonite church. He was known for goodheartedness and gentle disposition. The home was known for hospitality. Services were held in the immediate community and his home."

Joseph died in 1872 at 64 years of age and his wife Esther died June 8, 1893 at 79 years of age. They are buried in a small familyt cemetery with their son Henry and their small children who died young. This family cenetery is on or near the propery that the Willig family settled when they arrived in Canada (Lot 11, Concession 3).
